Pressure relief for your system

Expansion Tank Replacement

The expansion tank is the small tank on your water heater or boiler that gives heated water somewhere to go as it expands. When it waterlogs, you see the relief valve drip, hear pipes knock, and watch the pressure climb. We test the tank, confirm it has failed, and fit a new one sized for your system.

Signs the Tank Has Failed

A waterlogged tank cannot do its job, and the pressure has to go somewhere.

A dripping relief valve

Water weeping from the relief valve on the water heater or boiler, often into a drain or pan.

Knocking or banging

Pipes that knock as the system heats and the pressure has nowhere to expand.

A heavy tank

Tap the tank and the whole thing sounds dull and full instead of hollow up top.

Pressure that creeps up

A gauge that climbs as the water heats, past where it should sit.

Confirm the Tank, Then Swap It

We check the expansion tank by tapping it and reading the system pressure. A healthy tank sounds hollow near the top, where the air cushion sits. A failed one is heavy and dull all the way up, because it has filled with water and lost its cushion.

When the tank has gone, we isolate it, drain the pressure off, and fit a new tank sized and charged for your water heater or boiler. We confirm the pressure settles where it should before we leave.

When to Replace the Tank

A failed tank puts strain on the whole system, so it is worth sorting early.

The relief valve on the water heater or boiler drips
Pipes knock or bang as the system heats up
The pressure gauge climbs higher than it should
The tank feels heavy and sounds dull when tapped
You are already having other heating work done
The tank is old and has never been replaced

A Small Part That Protects the System

You see why the tank failed before we fit a new one.
